African Press Agencies Gather in Gabon to Tackle Media Ethics and Misinformation
The 10th Executive Council meeting of the Atlantic Federation of African Press Agencies (FAAPA) took place in Libreville, Gabon, on November 12 and 13, 2023. This significant gathering brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from national news agencies across Africa, senior Gabonese officials, and media professionals. The event focused on the critical theme of "Media Violations and Journalists' Responsibility."
FAAPA President Fouad Arif emphasized the importance of these meetings, stating, 'These gatherings showcase the vibrancy of our federation and our dedication to sharing experiences and achieving shared goals.'
The symbolic nature of the event was highlighted by Ghislain Ruffin Etoughet Nzue, Director General of the Agence Gabonaise de Presse (AGP). He noted that hosting the meeting in Libreville, a decade after FAAPA's establishment in Rabat, reinforces Gabon's commitment to the pan-African news network. Nzue proclaimed, 'African media are no longer passive observers; they are catalysts for change and drivers of progress.'
This meeting is part of a broader initiative to strengthen and professionalize African news agencies at a time when misinformation and editorial errors are eroding public trust. The urgency of the situation is underscored by recent studies. The 2024 African Youth Survey by the Ichikowitz Foundation revealed that a staggering two-thirds of young Africans spend over three hours daily on their phones, and approximately 22% encounter misinformation daily. FAAPA's discussions aim to safeguard the credibility and integrity of professional journalism in this rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The event served as a platform for delegates to exchange ideas, share best practices, and collaborate on strategies to combat misinformation and uphold ethical standards in journalism. By fostering a collective commitment to these principles, FAAPA aims to empower African media to play a pivotal role in shaping a more informed and resilient continent.
