The intersections near Country Mercantile, including Crestloch Road and East Vineyard Drive, are particularly concerning. The county has sent a letter to state and federal agencies, demanding attention to the alarming rate of fatal crashes. County Administrator Brian Dansel highlights the complex dangers, from severe speed differentials to agricultural traffic. The recent string of deadly collisions underscores the inadequacy of the current infrastructure.
"It's no longer a question of if, but when a major fatal incident will occur," Dansel warns. The letter calls for increased patrols, a traffic review, and dedicated safety funding. The commissioners are committed to doing their part, but managing growth is a challenge.
"We need to figure out a bypass plan," Commissioner Rocky Mullen says. The Connell Police Chief, Chris Lee, agrees, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach. He suggests examining changes to the entire corridor, starting with Highway 12 near the Snake River.
The commissioners plan to host a workshop to strategize on project management. Other major roadways of concern include Highway 17 and local improvements to Glade Road and Road 68.
The recent fatal wrecks on Highway 395 are a stark reminder of the urgency. In August, a mother and her daughter were killed at the intersection of Highway 395 and Foster Wells Road. Just weeks later, Patricia Wallum, 73, met a similar fate at the Crestloch Road intersection. In late 2023, Luis Acosta Hernandez, 23, was killed at the same intersection as Perrie Robitaille, the Kahlotus city councilman who lost his life in a recent collision.
