MALAWI: Malawi’s Catholic Bishops Conclude Their Annual Retreat with Renewed Resolve to Serve the Faithful
Fr. Francis Kachere
The Catholic Bishops of Malawi have wrapped up their five-day annual retreat in Mangochi on December 12, 2025. The gathering brought together nine bishops representing all eight dioceses across the country, providing a sacred space for self-examination, prayer, and discernment as the year draws to a close.
Archbishop George Desmond Tambala, OCD, of the Archdiocese of Lilongwe delivered the retreat’s reflection, with themedmed at “The Nativity of Christ, a Sign of Hope.” His message framed the time away as a gift of grace, inviting the bishops to pause, listen for the Lord’s voice, and recommit to being faithful pastors who walk alongside their priests, religious communities, and lay faithful in faith, hope, and love. Throughout the days, the prelates engaged in quiet contemplation, seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance for their ministry in the year ahead.
The retreat culminated in a Eucharistic celebration led by Archbishop Thomas Luke Msusa of the Archdiocese of Blantyre. At the Mass, the bishops reaffirmed their pledge to shepherd the People of God in Malawi with humility, courage, and a deep trust in Divine Providence.
