A new train station could be coming to the Edinburgh-Glasgow line, but will it become a reality? West Lothian Council is making a bold move to secure funding for a new railway station in Winchburgh, a crucial step in the development of this new station. ScotRail has already given the proposal a thumbs up, but the journey ahead is far from over.
While the exact cost is still under wraps, similar projects have cost between £15 million and £20 million. This project has been in the works for over a decade, with plans approved last month to bring commuter services to the rapidly expanding community. The council is working with several partners, including Winchburgh Developments Ltd, the Edinburgh & South East Scotland City Region Joint Committee, and others, to make this happen.
Funding is the key to unlock the project. The council is tapping into the City Region Deal, which has committed at least £50 million to support strategic housing sites, including Winchburgh. But here's where it gets controversial... Partners are also open to exploring other funding options from the Scottish Government if needed.
The City Region Deals are designed to boost regional economies, attract investment, create jobs, and accelerate growth. This funding request follows the granting of planning permission in October. The project boasts strong transport and economic benefits, including reduced car commuting.
By 2030, the station is projected to serve around 625 passengers daily. The cost-benefit ratio is exceptionally strong, with a ratio of 2.1 before revenue and between 4.26 and 5.6 including revenue. The new station will also benefit surrounding towns, such as Linlithgow, which has experienced rising parking problems due to increased commuter traffic.
West Lothian Council's Leader, Lawrence Fitzpatrick, emphasized the importance of this project for improving the local economy and attracting investment. John Hamilton, CEO of Winchburgh Developments Ltd, highlighted the significance of the station as a critical piece of the transport infrastructure, promising quicker, cleaner journeys and reduced road congestion. Phil Campbell from ScotRail welcomed the progress, emphasizing the importance of improved connectivity and sustainable travel. Edinburgh Councillor Jane Meagher pointed out the need for sustainable travel options in the fastest-growing region in Scotland. Brian Butler from SEStran also welcomed the proposal, highlighting the project's contribution to greener and more inclusive travel choices.
