The White Lotus' Impact on Lorazepam Searches: A Cause for Concern?
The hit TV show The White Lotus has sparked a surge in internet searches for the anti-anxiety drug lorazepam, according to recent research. The third season of the show, released in February 2025, features the entitled North Carolina housewife Victoria Ratliff frequently reaching for her lorazepam. This has led researchers to investigate the potential impact of media representation on drug usage.
Lorazepam, a benzodiazepine, is known to boost the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain, providing its calming effects. However, the show's portrayal of the drug has raised concerns among experts. Dr. Olivia Maynard, from the University of Bristol, warns of the illicit production of benzodiazepines and the risks associated with incorrect dosing and contamination.
The study, published in JAMA Health Forum, analyzed Google data. Searches for lorazepam increased significantly after the show's release, with almost twice as many searches over a 12-week period compared to normal. This trend was also reflected in searches about how to obtain the drug, which were 64% higher than expected.
Interestingly, similar spikes were not observed for other benzodiazepines like alprazolam or clonazepam, which were not mentioned in The White Lotus. This suggests that the show's specific mention of lorazepam may have influenced the surge in interest.
While the study cannot determine if people were buying the drug, it highlights the potential dangers. The researchers emphasize the importance of addressing the rise in prescribing and illegitimate online pharmacies. They also caution against the show's lack of portrayal of the risks associated with abruptly stopping lorazepam and the dangers of mixing it with alcohol.
The entertainment industry is urged to adopt 'best practice' approaches to prescription medications, possibly through health information panels. However, experts like Professor Harry Sumnall argue that relying solely on creative solutions may not be practical, and enforcement against illicit manufacturers and prescriber education are crucial in addressing the issue.
